To avoid shrinkage, it is important to follow the care instructions on the jumper's label carefully. Many wool jumpers can be machine washed on a delicate cycle, but there are some exceptions like our Shetland Wool Jumper that required hand washing to retain its shape and quality.
Avoid using a washing machine on a regular cycle as the rapid spins and hot water will agitate and shrink the natural wool fibres. Instead, either hand wash your wool jumper or use a machine wash with cool water on a gentle cycle, or one specifically designed for delicate or wool garments. Use a mild detergent and avoid using bleach or fabric softeners that can damage the wool.
The majority of our wool jumpers are suitable for machine washing up to 30°C, although some require hand washing for best results and longevity so be sure to check the garment’s care label.
After washing, lay your wool jumper flat on a towel to air dry. You may want to reshape the garment while doing so, but don’t hang it up to dry as this can cause it to stretch and misshapen.
It’s important to store your jumpers correctly to keep them looking their best for years to come. To store your jumpers properly, fold them neatly and store them in a drawer or on a shelf instead of hanging them.
You could also use cedar blocks or lavender sachets in your storage space to help keep your wool jumpers safe from moths and other pests, as these two fragrances are natural bug repellents.
Yes! Wool jumpers can be dry cleaned, but it's important to choose a reputable dry cleaner who has experience working with wool. Dry cleaning uses a solvent to remove dirt and stains from the wool, which can be harsh on the fibres if not done properly.
However, dry cleaning isn’t always necessary and, in most cases, a simple spot clean or gentle cycle in the washing machine at home will do the trick. But if you’re still unsure, read the care label on your wool jumper to see if dry cleaning is suitable.
It is generally not recommended to tumble dry wool jumpers as the high heat and tumbling action can cause the fibres to shrink, distort or felt together and ruin the appearance of your garment. Instead, wool jumpers should be dried flat on a towel or a drying rack to retain their original shape and size.
Your wool jumper is durable and should last for years to come, but its lifespan will vary with how often you wear the garment and how well you look after it.
A jumper that is made with quality wool can be a worthwhile investment for any wardrobe, providing that you keep up with the correct care and maintenance requirements. The wool jumpers from Country Collection are made with high-quality natural wool fibres that can withstand regular use and maintain their shape and softness over time.
To maximise the lifespan of your wool jumper, it is important to follow the care instructions carefully. If you’re unsure, check the label on your garment or read our ‘how to look after wool jumpers’ section above.
It is possible for a wool jumper to shrink if it is not washed or dried properly. Wool fibres are sensitive to heat, friction and changes in moisture levels, which can cause them to compress and matt together, resulting in a smaller and tighter garment.
To avoid shrinkage, follow the care instructions on the jumper's label carefully.
Pilling is a common issue that can occur with wool jumpers, caused by the natural wool fibres rubbing against each other and becoming tangled. This friction can cause loose fibres to accumulate on the surface of the garment, forming small balls known as ‘pills’.
Sometimes referred to as ‘bobbling’, pilling can also be exacerbated by other factors such as wearing a wool jumper with rough fabrics (such as contact with velcro or other textured materials) or washing the garment on a high spin setting or with harsh detergents or hot water.
Pilling does not generally affect the overall quality or warmth of the jumper, but you can carry out regular maintenance such as de-pilling with a wool comb or pill shaver to keep your jumper looking its best.
Our merino wool jumpers, however, are made of long fibres that do not pill as easily, making them a great option if you’re looking for a high-quality jumper with lower maintenance requirements.
Yes, wool jumpers are warm and provide great insulation but the level of warmth will depend on the thickness of the yarn, the style of the jumper and the way it is worn.
Wool fibres have natural insulating properties that allow them to trap air close to the body, but they are also breathable and moisture-wicking which means they’re great for temperature regulation to keep you warm when it’s cold and cool when it’s warm, no matter the weather.
At Country Collection we have an array of luxury natural fibre capes which include pure lambswool and cosy Shetland wool. Our gorgeous reversible wrap is created from fabulously soft touch viscose.
